Wordless Wednesday - Helsinki

Just back from a cruise, so here are the first of my photos.

Helsinki Harbour 27.07.25

We had a tour around Helsinki, but I wished we had taken a cab to the waterfront instead. Our tour guide was not the best as she repeated everything about ten times and in English every time.

We did visit the Church in the rock though.

Temppeliaukio church is situated in the heart of Helsinki, at the end of Fredrikinkatu. Excavated directly into solid rock, it is an architectural gem designed by the two brothers Suomalainen and erected in 1969. The church hall is covered with a dome, lined with 22 kilometres of copper and supported on the rock walls by reinforced concrete beams. The dome has 180 skylights, through which the natural light is let in throughout the year. The interior walls are of rugged rock and rubble and an ice-age crevice serves as the altarpiece. Due to its excellent acoustics the church is a popular venue for concerts and has hosted up to 400 concerts a single year.

The organist was playing while we were there, and the acoustics are indeed very good

I am joining Sandee at Comedy Plus for the blog hop.

  6. That pipe organ must have been a delight to hear. What a beautiful setting. In the first picture out into the harbor I see several of the large cruise ships. They certainly are big. So glad you got to make this trip and now we get to enjoy your photos. Great week back at home.

  11. I've visited a number of churches in my area due to an annual event called Sacred Sites Sunday, but have never seen anything like this. It was nice to have the opportunity to hear the acoustics.
