More wordy than wordless. Tenerife, my Nemesis!
After our cruise in May 2023 Ivor said I had to have a wheelchair. I knew he was right because my joints were so stiff and painful from the chemo pills that my mobility was badly affected. I didn't want one but couldn't go where I wanted to, so reluctantly agreed.
He made a slalom in the garage (farm garage so it is very big) and I practiced. We went out a few times to get used to it but I really dislike the tiny joystick that doesn't do what I want it to.
Our next cruise was to the Canary Islands and I took the darned thing ashore. The promenade was long and wide and I started to get more confident. We crossed the road and went into the town and then through the arches onto a sandy area. Instead of coming back the way we went we went off to the right of the arches and I was bombing along getting more confident all the time. Then there was the big kerb! I speeded up thinking if I went faster the wheelchair would go up and over it. Wrong! I hit the kerb at top speed which is about 5mph. The wheelchair tipped forward and Ivor grabbed the back before I was thrown out. That wasn't the worst though. The Devil's transport had got stuck on the kerb. Instead of helping me out, Ivor tried unsuccessfully moving it. Next thing, two handsome young Spaniards came running over , lifted the wheelchair with me still in it and freed it.
I was so embarrassed! I didn't intend writing all of this but was looking through my photos for this post. When I saw this one it brought all those awful memories flooding back.
In case anyone is in any doubt, I hate that darned wheelchair! It will be brought out again for our next cruise in July but I think I need a lot of practice before then.

What a horrible experience. I hate wheelchairs too, but they are necessary at times. I'm sure you won't be trying to jump curbs anymore. I'm glad it turned out okay.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Love and healing hugs, my friend. ♥
That is a beautiful photo. So sorry about the mishap, luckily you weren't injured. My mother lived with us for 18 years before she passed. She was not very mobile at all and balked at the thought of a wheelchair for years. We finally convinced her that we wanted to do a Disney trip with the kids and she had no choice but to come as she could not stay home alone. She finally agreed and ended up having a fantastic time. Except for the one time when her brake was not set and she went rolling down the aisle of the tram we were riding. No injuries but she too was mortified.
ReplyDeleteWheelchairs aren't overly fun but sometimes they are necessary. Hey, no reason to be embarrassed and thank goodness those young lads were around.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrible experience. But as Terry said, sometimes things are happening and the embarrassment should be cancelled... I wish you to find a way for being better, Jackie!
ReplyDeleteHugs and a fabulous Wednesday!❤️π
Ugh, not the kind of memory you want from your holidays. I echo other comments, though. There's no reason to be embarrassed and you had bonus eye candy with the two fellows who helped you! π
ReplyDeleteI could understand why it's not a good memory for you ... but I used my imagination as your rescuers came ... LOL .... I imagine it more fun and cute ... I sure hope your next cruise is better - but yes practice practice practice!
ReplyDeletewell, ewe did get a nice foto auntie jackie….iz it oh kay for me ta say that ππΊππ
ReplyDelete( no need to be embarrassed, on two feet, I turned to say something to a co worker and
literally walked into the wall, in front of them and customers alike )
Well, that was no fun, but you'll drive more responsibly next time, lol. A new cruise to look forward to will make the chair just background clutter while looking about.
ReplyDeleteEverything ended well, so ....no worries there! :-) You'll get better at driving it.
ReplyDeleteSorry that happened to you. Glad you didn't fall out of the chair. XO
ReplyDeleteWhat an adventure! I can totally see why you’d be frustrated with the wheelchair. But it’s great that you kept going, even after hitting that curb! Glad the young men helped out. Wishing you lots of practice before your next cruise!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful photo but I understand the memory associated with it isn't the best. Practice and get good with the thing and remember, in one sense it has given you back your mobility.
ReplyDeleteBless you. I do think any of that sort of kit needs a lot of practice. A bit like Mrs H getting used to driving a tractor! And no two are the same. Good luck on your next outing. ππ
