Wordless Wednesday - Dublin Ireland.

More from our cruise in 2012. This week it is Dublin.

Trinity College Dublin.

Trinity College.
Dublin City Hall.

A typical Dublin pub.

Statue of 2 shoppers taking a rest, locally known as "The Hags with the Bags."

Statue of Molly Malone.

2025 update:

The Molly Malone statue on Dublin’s Suffolk Street is to be put under protective watch to deter tourists from rubbing the figure’s bronze breasts, Dublin City Council has confirmed.

The statue, which depicts a fishmonger immortalised in a mid-19th century music hall song, has over the last decade become subject to a dubious “tradition” where tourists rub its breasts for luck.

The practice has resulted in discolouration and wearing of the bronze surface and has also caused concerns about disrespect for the artwork, which was completed in the late 1980s by the sculptor Jeanne Rynhart, who died in 2020.

The council has decided to use stewards from next month to patrol the area in front of the statue to deter people from rubbing the surface and to ask tour guides not to encourage their groups to indulge in the practice.

This was first announced on April 1st but specifically stated it was not an April Fool. They haven't convinced me but we will find out in May!

Wordless Wednesday, Orkney Islands.

More from Orkney, Skara Brae.

The houses were built sunken into the ground.

It felt strange to be walking where people were known to have lived thousands of years ago.

This is one of the passageways into the houses that has been reconstructed using the original stonework.

Wordless Wednesday - Orkney Islands.

As I have been unable to go on holiday for some time I decided to go back to some of my early posts on this blog and post them. This was a British Isles cruise in 2012.

Our first stop on Orkney was Maes Howe which is an ancient chamber tomb dating back to 2700BC. It was very low to get in and unfortunately as I get claustrophobic, after the first two or three feet, I had to reverse back out and let Ivor go in on his own.

He said once you had gone through the low and narrow passage it opened into a large chamber with some natural light. I took his word for that and waited outside.

Next were the four Standing Stones of Stenness thought to date from 3100BC and the oldest standing stones in Britain. You can read more about them here.
Now I have decided to post parts of old posts there will be more of them until we resume travelling  later this year.

Wordless Wednesday

Tromsø in Norway's Arctic Circle. I can't remember exactly where this was but was during a private tour. It was taken around 4.30pm and never gets much lighter during the winter months. We have also been there June/July and it feels strange to see the sun just above the horizon at midnight at that time of the year.

Wordless Wednesday

I found this one when looking through my photos. It is in Norway, I think Tromso but can't be sure. I usually make a note of where photos are taken, but not this time.

I thought it was ideal as it is close to Valentine's Day.

Wordless Wednesday

More wordy than wordless. Tenerife, my Nemesis!

After our cruise in May 2023 Ivor said I had to have a wheelchair. I knew he was right because my joints were so stiff and painful from the chemo pills that my mobility was badly affected. I didn't want one but couldn't go where I wanted to, so reluctantly agreed.

He made a slalom in the garage (farm garage so it is very big) and I practiced. We went out a few times to get used to it but I really dislike the tiny joystick that doesn't do what I want it to.

Our next cruise was to the Canary Islands and I took the darned thing ashore. The promenade was long and wide and I started to get more confident. We crossed the road and went into the town and then through the arches onto a sandy area. Instead of coming back the way we went we went off to the right of the arches and I was bombing along getting more confident all the time. Then there was the big kerb! I speeded up thinking if I went faster the wheelchair would go up and over it. Wrong! I hit the kerb at top speed which is about 5mph. The wheelchair tipped forward and Ivor grabbed the back before I was thrown out. That wasn't the worst though. The Devil's transport had got stuck on the kerb. Instead of helping me out, Ivor tried unsuccessfully moving it. Next thing, two handsome young Spaniards came running over , lifted the wheelchair with me still in it and freed it.

I was so embarrassed! I didn't intend writing all of this but was looking through my photos for this post. When I saw this one it brought all those awful memories flooding back.

In case anyone is in any doubt, I hate that darned wheelchair! It will be brought out again for our next cruise in July but I think I need a lot of practice before then.

Wordless Wednesday - Northern Lights

As you can see, these are not photos taken by me but taken by the ship photographer. We were there though to see them. The last photo is one that I took.

This last photo was taken by me from our cabin balcony. Although I was using my better camera it didn't pick up the colours as well and I needed a tripod to keep the camera still.

Wordless Wednesday.

Alta Norway September 2019. Last cruise before Covid lockdown. We took a private tour from here and there was about 2 inches of snow. When we got back a few hours later it was nearer 18 inches!
